denise - the internet is a great place to market. i think us stylists and barbers need to embrace it more. people like janet k do it right with the video blogs and stuff. and the ladies behind ubc doing this site is a big step toward bringing us together in a business frame of mind dont't you think?

THE INTERNET IS THE WAY TO GO CREATE A BLOG,WEBSITE THEN MAKE SOME BUSINESS CARDS AND PUT THE WEBSITE ON THERE CREATE SOME YOUTUBE TUTORIALS GET YOURSELF OUT THERE EVEN A TWITTER ACCOUNT IS GOOD

I would do an email or mailing campaign, offering a welcome back special. Also do a referral program give your clients a discount on services when they send a new client to you. You can order post cards for the mailing campaign from vistaprint.com for free just pay postage. You can do a 60 day free trial with constant contact to create an email campaign. Last but not least the relaxers and colors that you use in your salon, go to there web pages and post your contact info under there salon locator info if they have it. I have received many clients in the past this way and did not have to pay for it. Good Luck

Sorry to hear about your unfortunate illness, your right we're not suppose to get sick. Some great ideas I've used were.... have your existing clients work for you! on those "slow days" have bring a friend day and give 50% off to your existing client and once her friend ( the now new client) has experienced your service she will become a regular client and want to participate in bring a friend day too. and so on and so on. Have a referral contest in your salon. Make it big and fabulous. And give a big juicey prize like a $1000.00 gift certifcate to Gucci. The catch is... in order for clients to enter the contest, they have to refer 3 clients. if you have 20 clients do that, thats 60 clients. multiply 60 times your least expensive service. let's say that service would be a a blow dry and style ?? for $50 ?? (i'm guessing) thats $3000. You've already paid for the gift certificate and have $ left over. And the CONTEST HAS'NT EVEN STARTED YET!!!!!. You also are guranteed to make more $ before the contest starts because u have'nt even added on extra services. (cut, color, relaxer, weaves, treatment etc.) that was the minimum. You can implement your own prize and the amount on a smaller scale if you like, however you want to grab people's attention you want to make it big whatever you do, create a buzz about you and salon. IT WORKS TRY IT!! I have some more ideas< i'll keep you posted. Let me know how you make out. GOOD LUCK!!
