#1 Network for Urban Beauty Professionals and The People They Inspire

I am currently a stylist and I specialize in braiding. I would really love to open my own salon but I really don't have a plan. Can anyone suggest the first steps to take in opening up your own salon? Thanks.

Hi Cali,
I have been working on my plan for almost a year now for my own shop. The first thing I did was figure out how much I had to make in order to keep the rent and maintainance including supplies. Then I had to decide on the shop size. I decided on a three station shop - very small. Just for me, a barber and a braider/naturalist. Now I have been working on saving. I already know the place I want. It is an existing place that does white hair. It is very small in a busy strip mall near a lot of fast food so we will get foot traffic. You can do it. Let's keep in contact.

This is my ultimate goaal too.
Hi, first you need to research the legal requirements in your state and county. What licenses do you need, what are the tax laws for retail and occupation? Write a business plan that includes ALL expenses then add 10% to that. Determine if you will be a commission salon or booth rent. Where will you be located? How will you advertise? How will you train new employees? Will you carry retail supplies? If so, locate your vendors and negotiate prices. Determine how much your build out will cost and how much your equipment and furniture will cost...try to find used, use Ebay and find going out of business sales.
Basically, you have to put all of your ideas on paper. Do the research and the leg work.
